Papaya Kings & Orange Crushes

Mateo's sneakers squeaked against the gym floor as he watched Sasha dance, her movements fluid like water. She was everything he wasn't—confident, bold, totally comfortable in her skin.

"You staring again?" his best friend Ty nudged him, holding out a fruit cup. "Try this papaya stuff. My abuela insists it's a 'delicacy,' but honestly? Tastes like soap."

Mateo took a bite anyway. His face scrunched up automatically. "Bro, this is actual tragedy."

"Tell me about it." Ty laughed. "Anyway, you gonna finally ask Sasha to homecoming or just keep being a total simp about it?"

Before Mateo could answer, Jason—the varsity quarterback and certified king of the school—rolled up with his crew. "Well, well. Mateo still wearing that sad orange hoodie? Bro, it's giving 2019 vibes."

The entire group erupted in laughter. Something snapped in Mateo's chest. This was it—the moment to finally stand up for himself, to stop letting Jason bulldoze over everyone like he owned the place.

"At least I don't need to put others down to feel good about myself," Mateo said, his voice surprisingly steady. "That's some real bull behavior, honestly."

The gym went dead silent. Sasha turned to watch, her eyebrows raised in what looked like... respect?

Jason's face flushed. "Whatever. You're just a—"

"A what?" Mateo stepped closer. "Go ahead. Say it."

Jason just scoffed and walked away, his crew trailing behind him like lost puppies.

Ty's jaw practically hit the floor. "Dude. That was actually legendary."

Sasha sauntered over, flipping her hair. "For real. That took guts." She smiled at Mateo, and his stomach did this ridiculous little flip thing. "Hey, you going to the game Friday?"

"Wouldn't miss it," Mateo heard himself say.

Later, as they walked home, Ty shook his head. "All I'm saying is, if standing up to Jason gets you closer to Sasha, I'm eating papaya every single day. No lie."

Mateo laughed, feeling lighter than he had in months. Sometimes, the worst things lead to the best moments. And maybe papaya wasn't so bad after all—especially if it came with a side of courage and a conversation with Sasha.
