Papaya, Foxes, and Finding Your Pack

Maya's fingers hovered over her phone screen, Instagram notifications blowing up. Her best friend since seventh grade, Taylor, had posted another TikTok without her. Again.

"Whatever," Maya muttered, shoving her phone in her pocket. She grabbed the papaya her mom had packed—bright orange flesh that looked like something from outer space compared to the stale cafeteria pizza.

"What IS that?" Taylor's new friend Chloe wrinkled her nose like she'd smelled something rotten. "It looks radioactive."

"It's papaya," Maya said, her voice steady even though her stomach did that familiar flip-flop thing. "My abuela sends them from Florida. They're actually super good."

"Weird," Chloe whispered to Taylor, and Taylor didn't even defend her.

Maya's chest felt tight. This was the same Taylor who used to split her spicy Cheetos with her in math class, who'd dyed a streak of purple in her hair last summer for spirit week. Now Taylor was all about the cheer squad and being "lowkey embarrassed" by anything that wasn't basic.

The cafeteria TV flashed highlights from Friday's game: the Foxes crushing their rivals, the Bulls."Did you see that catch?" Jake from Maya's English class slid into the seat across from her. "Total fox move."

"I mean, he's okay," Maya said, though she'd barely watched.

"Speaking of foxes..." Jake leaned in. "There's that rumor about senior ditch day. Everyone's supposed to meet at the old fox preserve behind the mall. You going?"

Before Maya could answer, Taylor's laugh rang out from three tables away—her new, forced laugh that didn't sound like her real one. The one she used around people who thought papaya was "weird."

Maya stood up, papaya in hand. She wasn't hungry anymore.

"You know what?" she said, turning toward Taylor's table. "You think this papaya's weird because you've never tried anything that wasn't basic. That's not my problem."

Taylor's face went bright red. Chloe looked shocked.

"And Taylor?" Maya continued, her voice shaking but loud. "You can have your new friends. But you don't get to make me feel small just so you can feel big. That's some bull right there."

The whole cafeteria went silent. Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. But then Jake started clapping. Slow clapping, like in the movies.

"Respect," he said. "And also... can I try some of that papaya?"

Maya sat back down, sliding the fruit across the table. "It's actually fire," she said. "If you're brave enough to try something real."

Taylor watched from across the room, something flickering behind her eyes. Maybe regret. Maybe not. But Maya didn't wait to find out.

Some friends drift apart. Some papayas taste like sunshine. And sometimes you have to roar like a bull to find out who your real pack actually is.
