Papaya Dreams & Padel Schemes
The country club's palm court shimmered with mid-July heat. Sixteen-year-old Jade balanced a tray of papaya smoothies, her club uniform suffocatingly starched. This wasn't how she'd planned to spend her summer—working at the place where her crush, golden-boy Tyler, spent every afternoon playing padel.
"Hey, Jade!" Tyler called, his racket swinging easily. He was shirtless, sweat glistening on his abs. "Want to join? We need a fourth."
Her brain short-circuited. She'd been secretly watching YouTube tutorials at 2 AM, practicing serves against her garage wall. But actually playing? With Tyler?
"Sure," she heard herself say, smoothies forgotten on a nearby table.
The game was chaos. Jade missed everything. Her racket hit the ball like she was swatting flies. Tyler's friends smirked. But then—a miracle. Her palm connected with the ball at the perfect angle, and it rocketed past Tyler's reach. Game point. Her team won.
"Not bad for a beginner," Tyler said, actually smiling at her.
Then it happened. A golden retriever—someone's dog, clearly escaped from the wealthy members' section—burst onto the court, barking joyfully. It knocked over the papaya smoothies. Pink pulp splattered everywhere, all over Tyler's pristine white shorts.
The group went silent.
But then Tyler laughed. He actually laughed, wiping papaya from his leg with zero hesitation. "Well, that's one way to end the game."
Jade's heart did something complicated. This perfect guy, laughing at pink fruit pulp all over his expensive clothes?
"Smoothies are on me next time," she said, suddenly confident.
"Next time?" Tyler raised an eyebrow. "I'm holding you to that."
As she cleaned up the mess, papaya sticky on her hands, Jade realized something: perfect wasn't real. And maybe, just maybe, she didn't need to be either.
