Papaya Dreams and Green Smoothie Disasters

Maya stared at the blender like it was a bomb. Inside: a handful of spinach (gross), half a papaya (weird slime fruit she'd never tried before), and some dusty vitamin her mom swore would change her life.

"This is it," she whispered. "The new me."

Summer before freshman year, and Maya had a plan. No more invisible middle school girl. She'd seen the TikToks. The glow-ups. The girls who reinvented themselves like magic between June and September.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat: *Pool party at Jake's Saturday!* followed by a thousand fire emojis.

Jake. The same Jake who'd barely looked at her since sixth grade, even though they'd been partnered for that science fair project where their volcano totally didn't explode.

She pressed blend.

The noise was louder than expected. The concoction turned into something that looked like swamp water from a horror movie.

"Maya?" Her mom leaned in the doorway. "What are you doing?"

"Glow-up," Maya said, like it was obvious. "Health is wealth, Mom. Read about it."

Her mom raised an eyebrow. "Since when do you care about vitamins?"

"Since forever." Maya took a sip and almost spit it back out. It tasted like grass and sadness. "It's good. Really. Acquired taste."

"Okay, weirdo." Her mom paused. "You know you don't have to change for anyone, right?"

Maya rolled her eyes, but her chest felt tight. "I know. I just... I want to start high school different. Better."

The truth was, she was tired of being the quiet girl. The one who sat in back, who never raised her hand, who watched everyone else live their lives through screens.

She spent the next week drinking her disgusting green smoothies. She posted a selfie with the papaya, captioned *summer vibes* and watched the likes roll in. Even Jake liked it.

Saturday came. She stood in front of the mirror in her new swimsuit, feeling exposed. Her skin wasn't glowing. Her hair wasn't suddenly perfect. She was still Maya.

At Jake's, everyone was talking about some drama Maya didn't understand. She sat on the edge of the pool, legs in the water, feeling like she'd failed at reinventing herself before she'd even really started.

"Hey." Jake dropped beside her, splashing water. "You look different."

"Different?" Her heart hammered.

"Yeah." He grinned. "Good different. Like... more you."

"More me?"

"Middle school you was always quiet. Now you're posting stuff, speaking up in the group chat. It's cool."

Maya blinked. She hadn't spoken up more. She'd just posted one picture.

"Oh my god," she realized. "You liked my papaya picture."

"Your what picture?" Jake laughed. "I liked that you posted something. You never post anything."

Later that night, Maya threw away the rest of the spinach. She ate the papaya plain — it was actually pretty good, sweet like sunshine. She kept the vitamins though.

Some things were worth keeping. But the rest? The rest she'd figure out on her own terms, blended or not.
