Papaya Chaos Protocol
Maya stared at the weird fruit on the counter like it was about to explode. Her mom had bought this papaya thing from the fancy grocery store, and now Maya had somehow convinced herself that making fresh papaya salsa would impress Jason at the party tonight. Because nothing says 'cool and sophisticated' like homemade fruit salsa, right?
Her phone buzzed. Crew group chat blowing up. 'u coming or what?' 'jason literally asking about u'
'Maybe,' she typed back, already doubting every life choice that led to this moment.
Buster, their ancient golden retriever, chose that exact second to barf something green and questionable onto the linoleum. Maya gagged. Mom's voice floated in from the living room, 'Honey, can you clean that up? And get some spinach out for dinner later!'
Spinach. Because clearly the universe wasn't done testing her.
Maya grabbed paper towels, eyeing the papaya like it had personally betrayed her. The recipe on her phone looked simple enough—papaya, lime, cilantro. But when she cut into it, this weird musky smell hit her nose. Was papaya supposed to smell like old socks?
Google said: 'Some people think papaya smells bad.' Others: 'If it smells like vomit, it's overripe.'
Great. Fantastic. Perfect.
Buster whined at her feet, probably judging her life choices. She gave him a piece of papaya as an experiment. He sniffed it, gave her this look that said 'really, human?' and walked away.
The salsa looked questionable. Taste test—why did she do that to herself? Her tongue did this confused little wiggle. Not terrible, exactly, but definitely not 'impress Jason at a party' material. More like 'sit alone in your room while your friends have actual fun' material.
'Maya! Spinach!' her mom hollered.
She grabbed the spinach bag, shoved it in the fridge, and stared at her failed papaya situation. Some nights you make gourmet salsa and become a social legend. Other nights you stand in your kitchen at 7 PM while your dog judges you and your papaya smells like a gym locker room.
Her phone lit up again. 'sry can't make it tonight. family thing. :('
Maya sagged against the counter. Relief, actually. She scraped the papaya mess into the trash, fed Buster another piece (he actually ate it this time, weirdo), and texted back: 'no worries!'
Some nights you make papaya chaos. Other nights you just order pizza and call it a win.
