Papaya Chaos at the Pyramid Scheme

Maya's stomach did backflips as she stood before the class, her family's papaya bread sitting on the presentation table like a neon sign screaming 'LOOK AT MY WEIRD CULTURE.'

'Alright, spill,' whispered Jordan from the back, leaning around the pyramids of biology textbooks stacked between their desks. 'What's actually in that?'

'Maya's Special Recipe,' she announced, voice cracking. Great. Now everyone was staring. Including Lucas, whose smile literally made her knees weak.

She should've listened to her cat, Mittens, who'd spent the entire morning yowling at her like she knew this would be a disaster. But no, Maya had to take the bull by the horns and embrace her heritage for Cultural Appreciation Day.

Her tía's recipe card had been stained with years of love and coconut oil, the paper soft as dreams. 'Papaya brings sweetness,' tía always said. 'Even when people try to be bitter.'

'So...' Lucas was actually walking up to her desk. 'Can I try some?'

Maya's brain short-circuited. 'Uh, yeah. It's—'

'WEIRD.' Jordan's voice carried. 'That's like, actual fruit in bread? Hard pass.'

The class went dead silent. Maya's face burned hotter than a thousand suns. She'd spent all night explaining to her mom why she was embarrassed to bring 'regular' food, and now this.

But Lucas took a bite. His eyes lit up. 'Dude. This is actually fire.'

Jordan squinted. 'For real?'

'For real.' Lucas took another piece. 'My abuela makes something similar. But, like, with plantains.'

Maya's chest did that thing where it felt too full and too light all at once. Lucas's abuela. Plantains. The tiny connections people made when they actually bothered.

'Whatever,' Jordan muttered. 'Still looks weird.'

'Your loss,' Lucas said, and winked at Maya.

A wink. AN ACTUAL WINK.

Mittens was definitely going to hear about this. And maybe, just maybe, embracing the weird papaya moments wasn't so terrible after all.
