Papaya Betrayal at Lunch

Maya's first week at Northwood High felt like walking through a minefield of invisible social rules. She'd spent lunch Tuesday watching the cool table from behind her sociology textbook, basically low-key spying on their hierarchy.

"You're being such a creep," whispered Priya, sliding into the seat across from her with a tray of exotic fruits. "Just go talk to them."

"I can't just—" Maya started, then froze. Leo, the guy with the dreamy hazel eyes from her AP Chem class, was walking toward them. Her heart did that stupid fluttery thing.

"Hey," he said, stopping at their table. "Anyone sitting here?"

Before Maya could respond, Priya loudly announced, "Maya was just telling me how she's obsessed with papaya. Like, weirdly obsessed."

Maya shot Priya a death glare. What was this girl doing? Priya had the strategic brain of a fox, always five steps ahead in the social chess game.

"Seriously?" Leo raised an eyebrow, amused. "That's... random."

"Super random," Maya agreed through gritted teeth.

"Well," Leo gestured to the empty seat. "Can I sit? My usual table is getting weird. Tyler's being such a bear about fantasy football again."

Maya's brain short-circuited. Leo sat next to her, close enough that she could smell his citrusy cologne, and they spent twenty minutes talking about everything from their terrible Spanish teacher to their dogs' weird personalities. Maya felt like she was levitating.

Until Thursday.

"I heard you like papaya," said Hailey, queen of the cool table, cornering Maya by the lockers. "Leo told everyone. It's kind of your thing now."

Maya's stomach dropped. She'd been betrayed by her own fabricated identity.

"It's... an acquired taste?" Maya tried.

"Weird," Hailey said, but she was smiling. "But also kinda brave? Everyone here pretends to like pepperoni pizza and vanilla everything. At least you're into something real."

Maya blinked. This was not the reaction she'd expected.

"Want to sit with us at lunch?" Hailey continued. "Leo said you're actually cool."

Behind Hailey, Priya gave Maya a subtle thumbs-up and a knowing grin. The fox had played them all, and somehow, Maya had won.
