Papaya Bear Summer

Liam's phone buzzed with the text he'd been dreading all week: pool party at Tyler's. You coming?

He stared at his ceiling. Tyler's house meant the actual pool, the one Liam had managed to avoid for three consecutive summers because he'd never learned to swim. Not properly. The kind of swim where you don't look like a panicked cat in a bathtub.

"Bro, you HAVE to go," Marcus insisted when they FaceTimed later. "Jessica's gonna be there."

Liam groaned. "And then what? Everyone finds out I bear the mark of the non-swimming loser? Pass."

"Just say you're sick."

"They'll know I'm lying!"

Saturday arrived like a deadline. Liam stood at Tyler's gate, heart running a marathon against his ribs. The backyard was already loud, chlorine-scented, packed with people whose bodies seemed to belong in water—unlike his, which belonged fully clothed on dry land.

He made it twenty minutes holding a papaya smoothie (Tyler's health-conscious mom's contribution, which everyone secretly hated) before someone shouted: "POOL CHICKEN FIGHT!"

Liam found himself somehow on someone's shoulders, arms locked with Jessica's, the water unexpectedly warm around his calves. He wasn't thinking. He was just... doing it. And then he slipped.

The world went blue and bubbly. He flailed, gulped water, panicked—

And surfaced coughing to everyone staring.

Then Tyler pointed from the pool edge, cracking up. "Dude, you look like a wet bear!"

Silence. Then laughter. Not mean laughter, but actual laughter. Jessica was laughing too, wiping water from her eyes.

"Seriously," she said, splashing him. "A drowned bear."

Liam's face burned. But then someone else yelled, "BEAR FIGHT IN THE POOL!" and suddenly four people were pretending to be bears, splashing and roaring, and it wasn't about him anymore—it was about how ridiculous this whole pool thing actually was.

Jessica swam over, treading water near him. "You okay?"

"Yeah," Liam said, realizing it was true. "Just... adjusting."

"Next time," she said, "maybe try actually swimming instead of fighting bears."

"There's gonna be a next time?"

"If there's papaya smoothies involved," she grinned, "definitely."
