Papaya Bear's Pyramid Scheme

bearpapayapyramid

Maya's first day sophomore year, she committed the ultimate cafeteria crime: she mistook a papaya for a mango and took a bite in front of everyone. The stringy texture hit her tongue like wet sawdust.

"Uh, Maya?" said Chloe from the top of the social pyramid, basically queen of everything. "That's definitely not a mango."

The whole table erupted. Maya's face burned hot. She'd spent all summer trying to reinvent herself—new wardrobe, new hair, new attempt at climbing Franklin High's invisible popularity hierarchy. Instead, she'd just become Papaya Girl.

By third period, someone had made a TikTok. By lunch, her new nickname was Papaya Bear.

She hid in the bathroom during lunch, staring at herself in the mirror. Who was she trying to be anyway? Someone who cared about the pyramid? Someone who pretended to like exotic fruit just to seem interesting?

"You good?" Riley asked, leaning against the doorframe. They'd been Maya's best friend since elementary school, back when Maya ate peanut butter sandwiches and didn't care what anyone thought.

"I just—I can't bear it," Maya whispered. "I'm trying so hard and it all backfired."

Riley shrugged. "So own it. Papaya Bear? That's kinda iconic ngl. Better than being another basic Chloe clone."

Something clicked. Maya stopped trying to climb the pyramid and started climbing out from under it. She wore her brightest shirt the next day. When someone called "Hey Papaya Bear!" in the hallway, she turned around and said, "What's up?"

By homecoming, nobody remembered she'd tried to be someone else. They just knew Maya—the girl who accidentally ate papaya, owned it, and somehow made that whole pyramid thing look completely mid.

Sometimes the coolest thing you can do is fall flat on your face, then stand up and laugh about it.
