Papaya at the Pyramid Scheme

Maya stood in the corner of Jordan's basement, clutching her dad's trucker **hat** like a safety blanket. The weekend party was in full swing—someone had built a literal **pyramid** of red Solo cups on the beer pong table, and everyone cheered when it finally collapsed. Maya was a sophomore, invited mostly because her older brother was cool, which meant exactly nobody knew her name.

"Hey, you want some?" A guy she recognized from AP Bio gestured to a bowl of weird-looking fruit chunks.

"What is it?"

"**Papaya**," he said, like it explained everything. "My mom's trying to get me to eat healthy, so I brought it to balance out the junk." He laughed, and Maya noticed his braces. "I'm Leo, by the way."

"Maya." She tried a piece. It tasted like tropical sadness. "Interesting choice."

"My house is basically a fruit stand now." Leo shrugged. "Parents think if I eat enough exotic stuff, I'll become sophisticated. Instead I just bring **papaya** to parties and watch people pretend it's fireball shot."

Maya laughed. A genuine laugh, not the fake one she'd been practicing in the mirror all week.

"So what's your deal?" Leo asked. "You've been **bearing** the weight of that wall all night like it owes you money."

"I'm just... not great at this." She gestured vaguely at the room. "The whole social thing."

"Nobody is," Leo said. "We're all just guessing." He held up another piece of fruit. "Want to pretend this is gourmet again?"

Maya realized she was still clutching the **hat**. She set it on a nearby shelf. "Sure. But only if you admit the **pyramid** of cups was structurally unsound."

"Oh, absolutely." Leo grinned. "Engineering failure at its finest."

For the first time all night, Maya didn't feel like an outsider watching from the edges. She was just a girl eating fruit with a boy who made her laugh, and somehow, that was enough.
