Papaya at the Pyramid's Peak

The papaya sat on the marble counter, its sunset flesh already browning at the edges—much like my friendship with Elena. We'd climbed the corporate pyramid together, two hungry girls in their twenties, scheming over cheap wine in apartments we couldn't afford. She'd been the fox then: sleek, clever, always three moves ahead, her smile hiding calculations I'd been too naive to read.

But somewhere on the ascent to the C-suite, she'd learned that loyalty was just leverage.

I spot Mittens lounging on the windowsill, watching me with those judgmental golden eyes. My cat had hated Elena from the start, arching her back and hissing that first dinner party, as if sensing the predator beneath the designer clothes. Animals know. They always know.

The papaya's sweet scent fills the kitchen—cloying, almost sickening. I'd bought it for our reconciliation dinner, back when I still believed in second chances. Before I discovered Elena had been leaking our merger talks to the competition, positioning herself as the savior while watching me drown.

She'd called herself my friend while sharpening her knife.

The corporate pyramid scheme wasn't just business. It was everything. Our shared history. The secrets we'd whispered during those endless nights of grinding work. The way she'd held my hair back when I drank too much at the Christmas party. All of it—transactional. Strategic.

I dump the papaya into the garbage. Let it rot with everything else.

Mittens winds around my legs, purring, and I scoop her up. Her warmth anchors me. "You were right," I murmur into her soft fur. "You called it."

The fox has moved on to new territory, leaving behind hollowed-out remains. But I'm still here. Still standing. And this time, I'm building something real—no pyramids, no schemes. Just me and the cat, and a life that's mine alone.
