Papaya at the Pool Party

The invitation slid into my DMs at 11:47 PM — Jessica's annual summer pool party. The one where everyone who's anyone shows up in their best swimsuits, where third-year crushes are made or broken in the span of three hours. I'd been waiting for this since seventh grade, ever since I saw Marcus Chen do a backflip off the diving board that somehow made him the coolest guy in our grade.

"You're going, right?" Maya asked the next day, flopping onto my bed during our study session. "Marcus will be there."

"No pressure," I muttered, highlighter hovering over my history notes.

The day of the party, my mom handed me a Tupperware container. "Bring this for the snack table. It's fresh papaya from the market."

"Mom, literally no one brings fruit to a pool party," I said. "There's gonna be pizza and chips and—"

"It's exotic," she insisted. "People will think it's sophisticated."

I showed up to Jessica's house clutching my container of papaya chunks like it was a bomb. The backyard was already popping — music thumping, bodies crowding around the inflatable pool, someone's phone documenting everything for TikTok. I spotted Jessica holding court in the shallow end, her perfect laugh carrying over the splash of water.

Marcus waved at me from the diving board. "Hey!"

My brain short-circuited. In that moment of absolute panic, I somehow ended up standing beside the snack table, my papaya container sitting next to a tower of chips and guac like the awkward cousin at family dinner.

"What's that?" Jessica swam over, dripping water, raising one perfectly sculpted eyebrow.

"It's... papaya?" I heard my voice crack.

She laughed, but not meanly. "No way. I love papaya. My abuela makes us eat it all the time in the DR."

"Wait, really?"

"Girl, yes." She reached for a chunk, juice dripping down her arm. "Try it, Marcus. Bet you've never had anything that's not from a drive-thru."

Marcus shrugged, popping a piece into his mouth. "Actually... kinda lit?"

"See?" Jessica grinned at me. "Thanks for bringing something real. This processed stuff is giving me a headache anyway."

By the end of the party, my papaya was gone, I'd learned Marco from Connecticut had never tried tropical fruit, and I'd somehow ended up in the pool with Marcus and Jessica discussing whether papaya belonged on pizza (consensus: absolutely not).

Sometimes the most embarrassing things turn out to be exactly what makes you fit in.
