Papaya at the Pool Party

Maya stood by the snack table at Jessica's epic pool party, clutching a slice of papaya like it was a lifeline. The fruit's orange flesh looked alien against everyone's常规 chips and salsa, but her mom had packed it in her lunchbox and she'd brought it along out of nervous habit.

Across the pool, Tyler—the guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since September—was showing off his cannonball technique. Maya felt like a total spy watching him from behind her sunglasses, cataloging every splash and laugh. Was he actually funny, or was everyone just hyping him up because he was cute?

"Nice fruit," said a voice behind her.

Maya jumped and nearly dropped her papaya. It was Derek, aka The Bull, the senior varsity linebacker who supposedly sent freshmen scrambling in the halls. But up close? He was just a tall guy with wet hair dripping pool water onto the concrete.

"Thanks," Maya squeaked. "It's... papaya."

"No cap, I know what it is," Derek laughed. "My abuela's obsessed with it. Says it's a superfood." He leaned against the table, surprisingly chill. "You're Maya, right? From Mr. Harrison's English class?"

She nodded, stunned. The Bull knew her name?

"You killed that presentation on The Great Gatsby," he said. "I was vibing with your take about how everyone's just performing for each other. Like this party." He gestured at the pool scene. "Everyone pretending to have the time of their lives."

Maya's papaya suddenly felt less like a shield and more like a bridge. "Exactly," she said, finding her voice. "Like Tyler over there? His laugh is totally fake when Jessica's around."

Derek's eyes widened. "You've been spying too?"

"Maybe," she grinned. "What's your excuse?"

He smirked. "My little sister's here somewhere. Also, I'm avoiding Jessica's questions about college football. Get me out of here?"

Maya's heart did a little flip—not for Tyler across the pool, but for this unexpected moment with someone she'd misjudged. She took a bite of papaya, its sweetness hitting her tongue like courage.

"Wanna judge everyone's swimsuits?" she asked. "Quietly. From behind the snack table."

Derek's grin was genuine. "Absolutely."

For the first time all night, Maya didn't feel like she was spying from the outside. She was right where she was supposed to be, papaya in hand, finally part of the story.
