Papaya at the Pool Party
Maya's crush on Liam had survived entire semester of algebra together, but it might not survive Rafael's pool party. The invite said 'swim optional' but Maya's anxiety said 'social suicide imminent.' She stood by the snack table, nursing a lukewarm soda while Kendall and her friends dominated the shallow end like they owned the water.
"Hey, you gonna swim or what?" Liam appeared beside her, dripping wet and devastatingly chill about it. Maya's brain short-circuited. "Yeah, totally. Just... warming up."
Warming up. At a party in July. Brilliant.
Rafael's cat, a chaotic orange tabby named Mango, chose that moment to streak across the patio, straight toward the buffet table. In the chaos, someone's exotic fruit platter went flying—sliced papaya everywhere.
"Bro, my papaya!" Rafael groaned, while Kendall's crew burst into laughter. Maya dropped to help clean up, but her fingers brushed Liam's at the same time. He looked at her, really looked at her, and smiled. "You're good with cats. My sister's allergic, or I'd have one."
"Yeah, Mango is... a character," Maya managed, her heart doing gymnastics. They spent the next twenty minutes talking about everything and nothing while pretending to clean papaya splatters off the patio. The pool party noise faded into background noise.
Later, when Maya finally did get in the pool—with Liam, not near Kendall and her toxic energy floaties—she realized something profound. Sometimes the most cringey disasters (papaya everywhere, literally) led to the best moments. And sometimes the person you thought was out of your league was just standing by the snack table, waiting for you to stop overthinking and just exist.
"Same time next week?" Liam asked as the party wound down.
"Bet," Maya said, feeling like she might actually survive high school after all.
