Papaya at the Pool Party

Maya's iPhone buzzed in her pocket as she stood at the edge of Tyler's pool, clutching a Tupperware container like it held radioactive waste. Inside sat papaya chunks—her grandmother's recipe, something she'd begged her mom NOT to make her bring to "bring a dish" day.

"Hey Maya!" Jake called from the pool, his grin dangerously perfect. "Jump in!"

"Maybe later," she managed, sliding the container onto the snack table beside a sea of Doritos and Oreos.

Her phone litened again. Group chat explosion: Tyler's party was trending. Everyone was posting, streaming, filtering. Maya felt like she was underwater even though she hadn't even dipped her toes in yet.

Then she saw it: Tyler's older brother Ryan by the papaya, staring at it like it was an alien artifact. He picked up a piece.

"What IS this?" he announced to the pool cluster. "Fruit salad? From an alternate universe?"

Someone snorted. "It looks weird."

"It's papaya," Ryan said, popping it into his mouth. Everyone watched. He chewed. He paused.

"Actually... no cap, this is fire."

The pool went quiet.

"Wait, really?" Jake asked.

"My bull," Ryan said suddenly. "I have a mechanical bull in the garage. Who wants to ride it?"

The party MOVED. Everyone streamed toward the garage, leaving the snacks behind. Except Maya stood frozen at the table, staring at her papaya.

Her grandma's words echoed in her head: *Never hide what makes you different.*

Maya picked up a papaya chunk and ate it. Sweet, familiar, hers.

She pulled out her iPhone and snapped a photo of the nearly-empty container, caption: *Grandma's papaya. Cowards didn't even try.*

Comments flooded in.

*Wait send me the recipe*

*Lowkey obsessed now*

*Maya we slept on you*

Maya smiled, pocketed her phone, and walked toward the garage where a bull was waiting and her real life was finally beginning.
