Papaya at the Edge of Everything

The papaya sat on my desk like an alien artifact, its yellow-green skin mocking my entire existence. Finals week had turned me into a certified zombie, stumbling through school with under-eye circles deep enough to hide small mammals in.

"You gonna eat that, or just stare at it?" Marcus asked, flopping onto my bed with the dramatic flair of someone who hadn't had a chemistry test in three days.

"My mom bought it. Said I need vitamins." I poked the fruit. "It's basically a grenade of weirdness."

"Anything's better than studying." He grabbed his phone. "Speaking of weirdness—did you hear about Jessica's pyramid scheme?"

"Which one?" I deadpanned. Jessica collected failed business ventures like some people collected expensive candles.

"The new one. Something about 'ethical skincare' or whatever. She's trying to recruit half the junior class." He scrolled through Instagram. "It's actually kind of brilliant, in a terrifying way. She's built this whole pyramid of followers who think they're entrepreneurs."

My phone buzzed. A text from Elena: *Cable guy is here. Your dad's old office is getting wired. Act normal.*

My stomach dropped. The cable installation wasn't supposed to happen until next week. My dad's home office—the place where he'd hidden his "work materials" before he moved out two months ago. The place I'd been secretly investigating like the world's most unqualified spy, looking for whatever evidence might explain why he'd just... left.

"I have to go," I told Marcus, already grabbing my hoodie.

"What? Why? It's Saturday. We were gonna—"

"Family stuff. Cable guy. Emergency."

"Make it sound good at least."

I didn't explain. Some things you couldn't just *say*.

The entire bus ride home, my brain spiraled. What if the cable guy found something? What if there was nothing to find? What if I discovered something that made everything worse?

Elena met me at the door, looking guilty. "He's in the office. But listen—" She lowered her voice. "He said there's already stuff connected. Like, someone's been using the cable in there. Recently."

My heart hammered. "Recently?"

"Like, yesterday-recently."

We tiptoed to the office door. The cable guy's vanishing mumbled through the walls. Inside, the old desk lamp cast shadows on boxes I'd sworn were undisturbed.

And there, on the desk where my dad's computer used to be, sat a fresh papaya. With a note in his handwriting: *For the zombie teenager. Miss you. -Dad*

"You've got to be kidding me," Elena whispered.

But something loosened in my chest. He'd been here. While we were at school. While I'd been playing spy in my own house, thinking he'd abandoned us, he'd been slipping in, leaving fruit on my desk like some kind of weird dad-ritual.

"He's not gone," I realized out loud. "He's just... visiting on his own terms."

"That's creepy, though, right?" Elena's face scrunched. "Like, objectively creepy?"

"Maybe." I picked up the papaya. "But it beats a pyramid scheme any day."
