Papaya at Midnight

iphonepadelspypapaya

The papaya sat on Elena's counter, skin mottled with yellow freckles. A tropical anomaly in Seattle's gray November.

Marcus was late.

His iphone chimed—Spanish area code.

Elena sliced into the fruit, orange flesh yielding, black seeds glistening like secrets.

Marcus's padel obsession had begun three months ago. "Like tennis, but faster," he'd said. The Barcelona club membership cost more than their mortgage. He'd return from weekend trips exhausted, wrist wrapped, reeking of cologne and sweat.

She'd bought him the carbon fiber racquet. He'd never used it.

Then she'd found the membership card in his wallet. The club didn't exist.

The iphone buzzed again. *"Reunión a las 23:00."*

Meeting at 11:00 PM.

She'd assumed an affair. Would have preferred it.

Yesterday at the library: **NexTech Industries fusiona con DataCorp EspaƱa.**

Marcus worked for NexTech's competitor. Six months of padel tournaments that never existed.

His key in the lock.

Elena arranged papaya seeds on the granite like evidence.

"CariƱo," Marcus called. "Sorry I'm late."

"Papaya for dessert."

He entered, froze at her phone displaying the Spanish article. At the seeds forming accusation.

"Elena—"

"How long?"

"Six months." He sank into the chair. "Corporate intelligence. Not a spy."

"You're selling trade secrets."

"For us," he said. "Two million euros."

"Where's tonight's meeting?"

"Barcelona Club de Padel. Room 4B."

Elena dialed the number she'd written on a napkin.

"This is Elena Chen," she said in Spanish. "I have the NexTech documents. Ready to talk."

Marcus's face shattered.

"Papaya's ripe, Marcus." She lifted her suitcase. "You're too late."

She didn't feel betrayed walking to her car. She felt alive.

The game continued. She'd just changed players.
