Papaya Apocalypse

My mom insisted papaya was the fruit of love, which was honestly embarrassing. But when I finally got invited to Maya's house party—the one everyone would be talking about on Monday—I decided to lean into the cringe. I showed up with a whole papaya like it was normal party fare.

The party was already lit. Bass thumped through the walls, smelling like cheap body spray and nervous excitement. I spotted Maya across the room, laughing with her friends, and my stomach did that thing where it forgets how to function.

Then her dog—a massive, chaos-powered golden retriever named Buster—came barreling out of nowhere, probably sensing my fear. He knocked into me, and the papaya went flying. It smashed against the wall like a frag grenade, seeds and orange pulp everywhere. Everyone stared. I wanted to dissolve into the floorboards.

"Dude," someone said. "That's tragic."

But then Maya walked over, stepped carefully over the papaya carnage, and said, "Actually, that was kinda iconic."

We ended up spending the rest of the night on the back porch, watching her other dog, an ancient pug named Zombie (because he moved like the undead), snore in a sunbeam. Maya showed me this weird papaya smoothie recipe on her phone and said she'd always wanted to try making it.

"Next time," she said, like there would be a next time.

I walked home feeling like I could float, papaya humiliation completely forgotten. Sometimes the most disastrous moments become exactly what you needed. Sometimes showing up with the wrong fruit is exactly right.
