Papara...Wait, Who?

papayabearfriend

Maya's first day at Northwood High, and she's already spiraling. Her mom insisted she bring papaya for lunch—"something exotic," she'd said, with that determined mom-voice that meant this was non-negotiable. So here she is, sitting alone with a container of orange fruit chunks while everyone else has normal food.

Then HE sits down. Lucas Chen. The guy who'd somehow managed to become a legend before sophomore year even started. There were rumors he'd wrestled a bear at summer camp (definitely not true, probably), and that he'd gotten detention for throwing a spectacular graduation party for the class hamster (weirdly plausible).

"Is that... papaya?" Lucas asks, dropping into the seat across from her like they've been friends for years. His eyes are genuinely interested, not mocking. "My abuela used to grow these. Haven't had one since I was like, seven."

Maya's brain short-circuits. "You can have some. If you want. Not weird if you don't—"

"Bro, I'd love some." He tries a piece and actually does a little happy dance. "Okay, this hits different. You're literally saving my life right now. I forgot my lunch and I was gonna starve through chem."

And just like that, they're talking. Not just about papaya (which Lucas keeps rave-reviewing like he's on some exotic fruit podcast) but about everything. How he transferred here freshman year and ate lunch in the library for two months. How she moved from Chicago and her only friend was her neighbor's cat.

The bear rumor? Lucas laughs so hard he snorts papaya. "I wish. The most dramatic thing that happened was my little cousin throwing my phone in their fish tank."

By the time the bell rings, Maya has made her first friend. And apparently, she's now officially known as "The Papaya Girl"—which, honestly, she'll take. Beats being "The New Girl Who Ate Lunch Alone."
