Papara Summer Comeback

Maya's **hair** was supposed to be beach waves but looked more like electrocuted poodle. She stood by the snack table at Tyler's pool party, clutching her **iPhone** like a lifeline, scrolling through TikToks she'd already watched three times.

Across the pool, Jason—the **bull** of sophomore year—was doing cannonballs that splashed everyone in radius. His laugh echoed like he owned the place, because basically he did. Maya's stomach did that familiar twist whenever he looked her way.

"Hey, four-eyes!" someone called. Maya froze. Oh god, not today.

It was Brianna, clutching a fancy fruit drink. "Try this **papaya** smoothie. Unless you're too basic for exotic stuff."

Before Maya could decline, Brianna "tripped." The bright orange drink exploded all over Maya's white sundress. The whole pool area went silent.

"Oops," Brianna smirked.

Maya's face burned. Everyone was staring. Jason was laughing. Her **iPhone** buzzed with texts—probably her friends wondering where she was.

Then something in her snapped.

"You know what?" Maya said, her voice shaking but steady. "Papaya's supposed to be good for your skin. You should try some yourself."

She ditched her phone on a table and marched toward the pool. Jason's grin faded.

"What are you—" he started.

Maya stripped off her stained dress, revealing the swimsuit underneath, and dove in. She wasn't the best at **swimming**, but she'd watched enough Olympics to fake it. Her damp **hair** plastered to her face like a squished squid, but she didn't care.

"Race you," she called to Jason.

His jaw dropped. The guy who never backed down from anything suddenly looked unsure.

"What?"

"You heard me. Unless the bull's afraid of getting wet?"

Someone whistled. Another person chanted, "Race! Race! Race!"

They swam. Maya lost by half a lap, but when she pulled herself out of the pool, dripping and papaya-stained, everyone was clapping. Even Brianna looked shook.

Jason leaned against the pool edge, breathless. "You're crazy."

"And you're slow," Maya shot back, grabbing her **iPhone**. "Add me on Insta if you want a rematch."

Her friends found her later, changed into dry clothes, eating actual papaya from the fruit tray.

"You went viral," Luisa said, showing her the video. Maya watched herself—sticky, determined, challenging Jason. The comments were wild. #papayagirl was trending.

Her **hair** was still a mess. Her dress was probably ruined. But for the first time all summer, Maya felt like she could finally breathe.
