Papara-Stained Tank Tops

The pool party was already giving me major FOMO from my Instagram stories, but actually being here? A whole different level of awk. I stood by the snack table, clutching a plastic cup of lukewarm soda like it was a lifeline, watching the popular crowd float on inflatable unicorns in the crystalline water. My hair was frizzing in the humidity, and I'd already said "literally" four times in the first five minutes. Peak cringe.

Then someone tapped my shoulder. Leo. The Leo who sat behind me in bio and always let me borrow his extra pencil when I conveniently "forgot" mine.

"Hey, want the last papaya spear?" He held it out, all casual, like he wasn't basically offering me social salvation on a exotic fruit stick.

I reached for it with zero coordination, managing to somehow knock the papaya against my palm before it slid from my fingers and performed the most tragic slow-motion descent into his open backpack.

Silence. The kind where you can literally hear your own heartbeat doing cartwheels.

"That's... definitely one way to share." Leo's lips twitched.

"I'm so sorry, oh my god, I'll buy you a new backpack, I'll—"

"Maya." He was laughing now, actual laugh-lines crinkling around his eyes. "Chill. It's just papara. Unless you're secretly a fruit ninja assassin, we're good."

We spent the next hour on the deck chairs, watching the water ripple under the string lights, talking about everything and nothing. He admitted he felt just as out of place at these things. I told him about my anxiety over college apps, my fear that I'd never find my people.

"You're already one of my people," he said, so quiet I almost missed it.

My palms got sweaty again, but this time it wasn't from nerves.

Later, when my phone buzzed with a text from my best friend demanding details, I realized something profound: sometimes the most perfect moments aren't the ones you plan for Instagram. They're the messy, papaya-stained ones that catch you completely off guard.
