Maya's phone buzzed with Jaz's text: Dude, you coming to padel practice?

Maya stared at her half-eaten lunchthe weird spinach salad her mom packed, trying to be "healthy" or whatever. Meanwhile, her crush Sam was probably at the country club, being perfect with his perfect padel skills.

"Yeah," Maya typed back. "Why did I agree to join the club again?"

"Because Sam's there," Jaz replied instantly. "And also because you literally said you wanted to try new things this semester. Remember? Your big 'finding yourself' era?"

Maya groaned. Her existential crisis at 15 felt ridiculous, but whatever.

At practice, Sam actually smiled at her. "Hey Maya! Wanna play mixed doubles?"

Her brain short-circuited. "Um, yeah, sure!"

But here's the thingMaya had never played padel in her life. She'd watched, like, three TikToks about it. The first ball she tried to hit sailed directly into the net. Then she tripped. Then she face-planted.

Sam didn't laugh. Instead, he helped her up. "Everyone starts somewhere. My first game? I whiffed so hard I spun around and fell on my butt."

Maya's cheeks burned but she felt something weirdrelief?

After practice, Jaz was waiting at her locker with the most suspicious-looking green drink. "Try this," they said. "It's papaya, spinach, and coconut water. My abuela's recipe. She swears it's magic for first-day jitters."

"This looks like radioactive sludge," Maya said.

"Just try it, coward."

It wasactually okay? Sweet but earthy. Not terrible.

"So," Jaz said, leaning against the lockers. "How was it playing with Sam?"

Maya took another sip. "I humiliated myself in front of him. It was... kind of great?"

"Great?"

"Like, he didn't think I was cool or whatever. He just saw me fail and didn't care. That feels... real?" Maya shook her head. "I don't know. Maybe this whole 'finding myself' thing isn't about being good at stuff. Maybe it's about being okay with sucking at things sometimes."

Jaz raised an eyebrow. "That's actually deep for someone who drinks spinach sludge."

"Shut up."

"But seriously," Jaz said. "You going back?"

Maya thought about itabout Sam's easy laugh when she fell, about the weird papaya drink that made her feel brave, about not having to pretend she knew what she was doing.

"Yeah," she said. "I think I am."

Her phone buzzed again. Sam: Same time tomorrow?

Maya grinned. Bet.
