Papara Park Summer

Maya's palms were sweating so bad she could practically fill a water bottle. Not that she'd ever actually do that. Standing at the edge of JJ's backyard pool party, clutching her solo cup like it was a lifeline, she watched the popular crew cannonball into the turquoise water. Their laughter rippled across the surface, while Maya felt like she was drowning before she even stepped foot in the pool.

"Hey, you want some?" JJ's cousin Leo appeared beside her, holding out a cut fruit on a paper plate. "It's papaya. My mom grows them in our backyard."

Maya stared at the orange flesh, dotted with black seeds. She'd never tried papaya before. Too exotic, too different, too much like everything else about her that didn't quite fit in at their predominantly white suburban school.

"Sure," she heard herself say, because sometimes you have to fake it until you make it, right?

The first bite hit her tongue – musky sweet, slightly weird, unexpectedly good. Leo watched her, waiting. "It's kinda different, but in a good way, yeah?"

Maya nodded. Something shifted. Not a big something, but something. She looked at the water again, at everyone having the time of their lives, and realized nobody was actually watching her. They were too busy living their own moments.

"Race you to the deep end," Leo said suddenly, grinning.

"You're on."

Maya dropped her cup on the grass. Her palms stopped sweating. She jumped into the cool shock of chlorinated water, surfacing to Leo's splash following right after her. For the first time all summer, she wasn't watching from the edge. She was in it. The papaya aftertaste lingered on her tongue – different, but in a good way. Maybe she could be different in a good way too.
