Palms Sweat at the Pool Party

Maya's palms were sweating through her denim shorts — classic nervous energy. The Cannon family's pool party glittered before her like a social minefield. Everyone who was anyone from sophomore year was here, including Tyler, who'd been dominating her thoughts since that awkward encounter in the hallway last Tuesday.

She adjusted her baseball cap backward, trying to channel casual confidence she definitely didn't feel. Her older brother's dog, Buster, was having the time of his life chasing a tennis ball around the pool deck, completely unbothered by social hierarchies.

"Yo Maya! Finally made it!" Jordan called out, splashing water from the hot tub. "Tyler's been asking about you."

Maya's stomach did something acrobatic. "He has not."

"For real, man." Jordan nodded toward the lawn chairs where Tyler sat with his friends. Meanwhile, some random cat — must belong to the neighbors — was perched on the fence like it owned the place, judging everyone.

Just then, Tyler stood up and started walking over. Maya's palms felt like they'd reached maximum capacity. She considered faking a phone emergency, maybe jumping in the pool fully clothed, anything to avoid this.

"Hey," Tyler said, scratching the back of his neck. "Nice hat."

"Thanks." Wow, brilliant conversational work, Maya. Pulitzer-worthy.

"So, I heard you're trying out for the softball team this spring?"

"Yeah, hopefully. I've been practicing my swing. My dad's old baseball bat is basically my best friend at this point."

Tyler laughed. Actually laughed. Not fake polite laugh, but real. "That's cool. I might try out for the team too. We could, like, practice together sometime?"

Maya's brain short-circuited. Was this happening? Was the universe finally throwing her a bone after years of being the background character in her own life?

"Yeah," she managed, her voice only slightly cracking. "That'd be sick."

"Cool." He pulled out his phone. "What's your insta? I'll add you."

As they exchanged handles, Maya caught Jordan's eye from the hot tub. He gave her two thumbs up and the world's most obvious wink. Maya rolled her eyes, but she was smiling — genuinely smiling. Her palms had stopped sweating, and suddenly the pool party didn't feel like such a minefield anymore. Sometimes, against all odds, things actually worked out.
