Palms, Padel, and Prophecy

Summer at the Shoreview Club meant one thing: Lena's social survival depended on not embarrassing herself at padel. Again.

"Your form's getting better," Maya said, barely suppressing a smile as Lena whiffed another serve into the net.

"Yeah, sure," Lena muttered, wiping her sweaty palms on her shorts. The July heat was already making everything sticky, and now Tyler—the absolute dream of tenth grade—was walking past Court 3.

His golden retriever, Buster, trotted beside him off-leash (club rules were apparently optional when your parents owned half the membership). The dog made a beeline for Lena's water bottle, knocking it over with a happy bark.

"Buster!" Tyler called, jogging over. "Sorry, he's obsessed with anything that isn't nailed down."

Lena's brain short-circuited. "It's fine! I mean, no worries. He's a good dog. A very good boy." Why did she say it like that?

"Hey," Tyler said, scratching behind Buster's ears. "You going to Chloe's party tonight?"

Chloe. The Chloe, whose Instagram stories made Lena's life seem like a documentary on beige paint drying.

"Probably," Lena lied. She hadn't been invited.

"Cool. I'll be there." He paused, studying her face. "You know, my aunt reads palms. She says everyone's got a life line that tells you if you're gonna do something big."

Lena blinked. "Random, but okay?"

"Yours looks," he pointed at her hand, "like you're about to make a shot."

He gestured to the padel court.

"Watch."

Lena grabbed her racquet. Tyler watched. Maya watched. Even Buster sat down like he knew something was about to go down.

She hit the serve. It cleared the net. It landed inside the line. It was perfect.

"Told you," Tyler said, grinning. "See you tonight."

As he walked away, Maya's mouth fell open. "You were INVITED?"

"Maya," Lena said, heart pounding, "I think I just made the varsity team of life."

Her phone buzzed. A DM from Chloe herself: hey buster's mom said you're cool come through tonight

Lena looked at her palm. Maybe there was something to this life line thing after all—or maybe sometimes, the universe just decides to cut you a break.

Either way, she was going to that party. And she was bringing her A-game.
