Palm Trees and Power Plays
The palm trees lining Lincoln High's courtyard looked fake — like everything else about sophomore year. Marcus gripped his backpack straps, sweat making his palms slick. Another day of existing at the bottom of the food chain.
"Yo Marcus!" called Jordan from the baseball diamond, waving his aluminum bat like a weapon. "You coming to watch practice or just gonna stare at us like a simp?"
The baseball team. They sat at the top of the social pyramid, throwing their weight around like they owned the school. Jordan especially. He'd been spreading rumors about Marcus's dog, Buster — a scrappy terrier mix who'd allegedly chewed through Jordan's expensive cleats last summer. (Marcus had secretly been thrilled about that one.)
"Nah," Marcus shot back, surprising himself. "Got better things to do than watch you strike out."
The team went dead silent.
Jordan's face darkened. "The hell you say?"
"You heard me." Marcus's heart hammered against his ribs. "You think you're such hot shit 'cause you hit a ball with a stick? Bull." He scoffed. "My dog could do better blindfolded."
Someone snorted. Jordan stepped forward, veins bulging in his neck. Marcus stood his ground, feet planted, suddenly realizing how tall he'd grown over summer. How much stronger he felt after working construction with his uncle.
"Say that again," Jordan threatened, finger in Marcus's face.
"Your game's trash," Marcus said, voice steady. "And everyone knows it. That's why you gotta act like this — 'cause you're scared if you stop bullying people, they'll see you're nothing special."
The baseball team shifted uncomfortably. Jordan's lip curled, but he didn't swing. He stepped back.
"Whatever," Jordan muttered, turning away. "Not worth my time."
Marcus exhaled, hands shaking as he walked away, palm trees swaying above him like they were nodding in approval. That night, Buster greeted him with frantic tail wags, and Marcus laughed, really laughed, for the first time in months. The pyramid still stood. But the view from the bottom felt different now.
