Palm Sweaty, Padel Ready
Maya's palms were literally dripping as she stood at the edge of the padel court. The Friday night lights cast long shadows across the country club, and somewhere in the distance, palm trees swayed like they were laughing at her.
"You coming?" Jake called from the baseline, flipping his hair back like he was in a slow-mo shampoo commercial. Her crush. The reason she'd lied about knowing how to play padel. The reason she was currently wearing her older sister's court shoes that were half a size too big.
"Yeah! Just... stretching."
Maya stretched. She stretched dramatically. Maybe if she stretched long enough, the earth would swallow her whole, or Jake would forget she existed, or—
A golden retriever burst through the hedge separating the courts from the golf course, tennis ball clamped triumphantly in its jaw. Chaos incarnate.
"Buster!" Some eighth grader screamed, chasing after the dog. Buster had other plans. Buster saw opportunity.
The dog made a beeline for Maya, who was still doing some sort of interpretive dance stretching routine. In one fluid motion, Buster deposited the slimy tennis ball directly into her hands and sat, tail thumping, looking at her like she was his new best friend.
Jake was jogging over. "Whoa, looks like you've made a fan."
Maya's face burned. "Ha. Yeah. Just living my best life as a dog magnet now, I guess."
"Buster! Get back here!" The eighth grader finally caught up, red-faced. "Sorry, he's obsessed with padel balls."
"No worries," Jake said, and then—actually this was happening—he smiled at Maya. "You're pretty good with dogs. You good at padel too?"
Maya looked at the slobbery ball in her hand, at Jake, at the ridiculous situation she'd stumbled into. The panic in her chest softened into something else. Something like... maybe this wouldn't be a total disaster after all.
"I'm about to be legendary," she said, tossing the ball back. "Watch this."
Her palm was still sweaty. Her shoes were still too big. But as Jake laughed and motioned her onto the court, Maya thought maybe, just maybe, legendary was exactly where she was headed.
