Palm Sweats & Pink Cowboy Hats
The gym smelled like floor wax and desperate hope. I stood by the punch bowl, clutching my red Solo cup like it was a lifeline, my sweaty palms making the cardboard soggy.
Across the room, Jordan—my ex-best friend turned popular kid—was wearing this ridiculous pink cowboy hat. Last year, we'd bought matching ones as a joke, planning to wear them to homecoming together. Now Jordan was surrounded by the varsity squad, laughing at something I couldn't hear.
"You good?"
I jumped. Maya materialized beside me, holding out a gummy vitamin from her pocket. "My mom says these help with anxiety. Or maybe that's just what she tells herself."
I took it. "Thanks. Just feeling... awkward."
"Everyone feels awkward at these things," Maya said. "That's literally the point."
The DJ transitioned from mumble rap to a slow song. Couples paired off like magnetic puzzle pieces. I watched Jordan and Tyler—captain of the lacrosse team—moving toward the dance floor. The pink hat bobbed through the crowd.
"You gonna go talk to them?" Maya asked.
"Nah. They're in their own world now."
"Bullshit." Maya crossed her arms. "You guys were friends since fourth grade. You think they suddenly stopped caring because they made varsity?"
I remembered the way Jordan had stopped sitting with me at lunch, the way our text threads went from hours-long to dry replies. Maybe they'd outgrown our friendship. Maybe I was holding on too tight.
"Fine," I said. "If I go over there and get humiliated, I'm blaming your vitamin."
Maya grinned. "Deal."
I weaved through the crowd, heart hammering against my ribs. When I reached Jordan and Tyler, the pink hat caught the disco light.
"Hey," I said. "Nice hat."
Jordan's face lit up. They grabbed my hand and pulled me into the huddle. "Dude! Where have you been? Tyler was just telling me about his aunt's ranch—she has an actual bull named Bubbles!"
"Bubbles?"
"He's surprisingly gentle," Tyler laughed.
And just like that, I wasn't the awkward kid by the punch bowl anymore. I was just another person in the circle, laughing at a bull named Bubbles, watching Jordan's pink hat tilt back as they giggled.
Maybe things had changed. But maybe that didn't mean I was left behind.
