Palm Sweat and First Serves

Maya's palms were literally sweating. Like, actual droplets forming as she clutched the padel racquet, wondering how she'd let Chloe talk her into this.

"You'll be fine!" Chloe had said. "It's just tennis with walls and cooler vibes."

Standing on the padel court at the country club her family could barely afford, Maya felt like a total fraud. Everyone else had their matching outfits and fancy racquets. Meanwhile, Maya was wearing her brother's old gym shorts and a nervous expression.

Across the net, Liam—the cute sophomore she'd been crushing on forever—was warming up with his devastatingly perfect serve. His sister Emma, who'd apparently been playing padel since birth, kept glancing over at Maya with this look that said, "What is this amateur doing here?"

"Ready?" Liam called out, flashing that smile that made Maya's stomach do backflips.

"Born ready," Maya lied.

The first serve came at her like a bullet. She swung, missed completely, and somehow managed to hit herself in the knee with her own racquet. Emma snorted. Maya felt her face burning hotter than the summer sun.

But then something weird happened. Instead of making some snarky comment, Emma walked over to the net.

"Hey, you're gripping it too tight," Emma said, surprisingly gentle. " relax. Your palms are probably killing you."

She demonstrated the proper grip, her movements smooth and practiced. "My first time playing, I tripped over my own feet and face-planted in front of everyone."

Maya blinked. "Really?"

"Scout's honor."

The game improved after that. Maya wasn't exactly crushing it, but she wasn't embarrassing herself either. She even managed to return a couple of Liam's serves, drawing a genuinely impressed "Nice!" from him.

Afterward, they all ended up at the pool—because apparently that was the thing you did after padel. Maya sat on the edge, feet in the cool water, watching Liam and Chloe compete to see who could hold their breath the longest.

"So," Emma said, dropping beside her, "you coming back next week?"

Maya hesitated. This whole social scene still felt terrifyingly foreign. But then she caught Liam's eye as he surfaced, sputtering and laughing when Chloe splashed water at him.

"Yeah," Maya found herself saying. "Yeah, I think I will."

Her palms might still be sweaty, and her padel game might still be a work in progress. But for the first time, Maya felt like she was actually swimming instead of just treading water.
