Palm Springs & Papaya Kings

My palms were sweating. Like, actual waterfall situation. Which was ironic, considering I was standing in Kai's kitchen while he made us smoothies, looking effortless in his track team hoodie.

"You good, Maya?" He asked, all concerned eyes and dimples. Meanwhile, I was vibrating with nervous energy because somehow, in the chaos of first-period English, I'd agreed to come over after school. To study. Totally. Definitely not because I'd been crushing on him since seventh grade.

"Yeah, just," I wiped my hands on my jeans. "Hot?"

Smooth. So smooth.

The truth was, half our grade had been walking around like zombies since finals started. Everyone running on three hours of sleep and desperation. But Kai? He was out there running actual miles every morning, still managing to be adorable and functional. Meanwhile, I'd been mainlining caffeine and praying for survival.

He slid a glass across the counter. Bright orange. unfamiliar.

"Papaya and spinach," he said. "My mom's recipe. It's actually good, I swear."

Papaya? Spinach? In a smoothie? This felt like a test. Like, was I cool enough to appreciate green health drinks, or would I throw up in his sink?

I took a sip. And then another. Actually... kinda bomb? Like, not something I'd choose over boba, but manageable.

"It's good," I said, and he grinned, and I tried not to stare at how his eyes crinkled.

"Told you. My teammate on track swore by it during regionals. Said it kept him from turning into a zombie."

"Is that what we are?" I laughed. "Finals week refugees?"

"Something like that." He leaned against the counter, closer than I expected. "Hey, Maya?"

"Yeah?"

"You're not like other people. You're... I don't know. Real."

My palms stopped sweating. My heart did something completely unprofessional.

"Thanks," I managed. "You too."

We studied geometry for an hour. I maybe learned some math. Definitely learned that Kai thought the same about me that I thought about him.

Walking home later, papaya-spinach aftertaste still lingering, I realized something: sometimes the most unexpected combinations actually work. Health food and crushes, sweaty palms and calculus, zombie weeks and perfect afternoons.

Sometimes running toward what scares you is exactly what you need.
