Palm Shadows at Sunset

The pyramid of the corporate hierarchy had never been clearer than it was at the company retreat in Cabo. Elena watched from the lounge chair as the executives played padel on the court below, their expensive rackets flashing in the Mexican sun. She'd been sent to gather intelligence—a corporate spy, technically, though her firm preferred 'competitive analyst.'

Her target was Marcus Chen, the VP whose mysterious departure last quarter had sent ripples through the stock price. Now he was consulting for their biggest rival. Or so they thought.

The game ended. Marcus wiped sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand, then extended his palm toward David, the CEO. They shook, but something in the grip looked too familiar. Too practiced.

Elena ordered another water from the passing waiter, her mind racing. The late nights. The encrypted files. The timing of Marcus's 'resignation' coinciding perfectly with that massive project launch.

She joined them for drinks at the pool bar, making small talk about the conference. David laughed about corporate politics, but his eyes kept darting toward Marcus like a man checking a wound that wouldn't heal.

'The pyramid scheme isn't what you think,' Marcus said quietly, sliding onto the stool beside her. 'Sometimes the person at the top isn't the one calling the shots.'

Elena's glass froze halfway to her lips. 'What are you saying?'

'David didn't fire me. I'm still working *with* him. The competing firm? It's a shell. We're building something new.'

The water in her glass suddenly seemed very heavy. All this time, she'd been tracking a ghost. The real story wasn't corporate espionage—it was a partnership. A pyramid with two apexes.

'Why tell me?'

Marcus smiled, something tired in it. 'Because you're the only one who actually looked.'

The sun dipped below the horizon, palm shadows stretching long across the patio like fingers reaching for something just out of reach.
