Palm Shadows at Dusk

palmdoghairspyfriend

The neon sign of the bar reflected in the rain-slicked window as Mara traced the lines in Carlos's palm. She'd done this a hundred times before—corporate espionage masquerading as intimacy—but tonight the weight of it pressed against her chest like a stone.

"You'll live a long life," she lied, watching his brown eyes soften. His dog, a ragged terrier named Bandit, slept beneath their table, oblivious to the betrayal unfolding above him.

Carlos swept a stray hair from Mara's forehead. "You're different from the others," he murmured. "My real friend in this company."

The words sliced through her. She'd been hired to spy, to steal his research on sustainable energy. Six weeks of manufactured closeness, late-night drinks, increasingly intimate conversations—all purchased by his competitors. She'd told herself it was just business, that everyone sold pieces of themselves to survive.

But somewhere between his stories about his daughter's graduation and the way he still made coffee for his late wife every morning, she'd forgotten the mission. The man who believed in saving the planet had somehow become more important than the paycheck.

The palm of his hand was warm against hers, his trust absolute. Her phone buzzed in her pocket—the client demanding results.

"You're shivering," Carlos said.

"Just cold," she lied again.

Bandit stirred, sensing the tension. The terrier's gray muzzle lifted, whining softly.

Outside, palm fronds silhouette against the streetlights, swaying in the humid breeze. In three days, Carlos would present his research. Tonight, she had to choose: the money that would finally let her escape this life, or the man who'd somehow become its meaning.

She withdrew her hand from his, reaching instead for her phone.
