Palm Shadows and Pool Secrets

Maya's palms were sweating as she clutched the papaya her mom made her bring to Jake's pool party. Like, who brings fruit to a high school rager? This was exactly why she felt like such a zombie lately — just going through the motions of normal teenage life while her brain was somewhere else entirely.

She stood by the palm tree, watching everyone else swimming and laughing like this was the most natural thing in the world. Jake, looking annoyingly perfect with his sun-bleached hair, was doing cannonballs off the diving board. Maya had been low-key spying on him from her phone screen for months — watching his Instagram stories, overanalyzing every caption — but now that she was actually here, she felt frozen.

"Hey, you gonna swim or just guard that papaya with your life?"

Maya jumped. It was Chloe, the girl she'd been avoiding eye contact with since third period English. "Uh, I'm good. Just... chilling."

"Cool, cool." Chloe leaned against the palm tree beside her. "I hate these things too. Everyone acting like they're having the best time ever when really we're all just wishing we were at home in sweatpants."

Maya blinked. Chloe seemed so confident, so... un-zombie-like. "Really? You seem like you're crushing it."

Chloe laughed. "That's called performance art, babe. I've been spy-level observing you all afternoon, by the way. You look like you're actually thinking interesting thoughts instead of just... whatever this is." She gestured at the swimming chaos.

Maya felt herself smile. Maybe she wasn't the only one feeling like an outsider in her own life.

"Want to share this papaya?" Maya asked. "I promise it's not as weird as it sounds."

Chloe's face lit up. "Only if you tell me what you're really thinking about."

"Deal."

As they sat under the palm tree, splitting the tropical fruit and watching their classmates swim like nothing mattered, Maya realized something: maybe being a teenager wasn't about pretending to be perfect. It was about finding the other zombies and admitting you were all just trying to figure it out together.
