Palm Readings & Pyramid Schemes

Maya's palms were sweating. Like, actually sweating through her denim shorts. Three rows behind the popular table in the cafeteria, she watched as Queen Bee Sarah demonstrated her new iPhone 15 Pro Max like it was holy scripture.

"It's literally the new hierarchy," whispered Jordan, sliding into the seat beside her. "The phone pyramids. Rich kids at the top, everyone else trying to climb up."

Maya had discovered something weirder than social rankings though. At the beach yesterday, while everyone was streaming TikToks and living their best aesthetic lives, she'd met this old guy under the palm trees who read palms. Actual legit palm reading. He'd told her she was at a crossroads, that she'd have to choose between climbing the pyramid or building her own path.

"Cheesy, right?" she'd laughed, but her phone buzzed in her pocket. A notification: Sarah had posted a "team meeting" story. The pyramid scheme wasn't just social anymore—Sarah was recruiting people for some "investment club" that was totally a multilevel marketing thing.

"So," Jordan nudged her. "You in or what?"

Maya looked at her hands. The palms were still sweaty, but she thought about the old man's words about building instead of climbing. She pulled out her iPhone—old, cracked, but hers—and started typing.

"Nah," she said, pocketing the phone. "I'm starting my own thing. No pyramid required."

Jordan raised an eyebrow but grinned. "Finally. What took you so long?"

Maya smiled, her palms finally dry. Sometimes you had to leave the pyramid to find your view.
