Palm Readings at the Pyramid Scheme
Maya's palms were sweating — like, actually dripping onto the cafeteria table. Which was gross, but also completely justified considering Tyler, the bull-headed captain of the lacrosse team, had just invited her to the party at Alex's house tonight.
"You going?" asked Riley, sliding into the seat across from her and nodding toward where Tyler stood with his friend group at the top of the school's social pyramid.
"I don't know," Maya said, tearing her paper napkin into tiny pieces. "Like, what's the play here?" She'd spent so long trying to be invisible, and now suddenly she was being noticed? It didn't compute.
Riley pulled their phone out, scrolled through snaps, and showed Maya a picture of herself from last year's Halloween — dressed as a fox, ears and everything. "Remember when you went full fox mode and tricked Mrs. Henderson into thinking your 'sick' was actually contagious? That was some next-level strategy."
Maya groaned. "I was bearing my soul to get out of a math test, Riley. Not exactly a flex."
"It's totally a flex," Riley insisted. "You outsmarted a teacher who's been playing this game longer than we've been alive. That's some Slytherin-level cunning."
The truth was, Maya was tired of playing it safe. Tired of sitting at the bottom of the pyramid watching everyone else have experiences she was too scared to reach for. So when Tyler texted her that night — *"hey, you coming? don't want to have to send a search party for u"* — she actually showed up.
And when some senior tried to pull that classic "let me read your palm" routine to hit on her, Maya didn't freeze. She flipped her hand over, stared dramatically at her own lifeline, and goes, "Oh wow, this says I'm about to get another drink. You want anything while I'm at the cups?"
Riley nearly choked on their soda laughing. Tyler actually smiled at her.
And maybe that's what growing up feels like — not suddenly becoming fearless, but learning to fake confidence until it stops being a fake thing and starts being real. Maybe the pyramid isn't as climbable as it looks, and maybe being clever like a fox is better than being strong like a bull anyway.
Maya's palms still sweat when she's nervous. She just doesn't let it stop her from showing up anymore.
