Palm Readings at the Pyramid Scheme

Maya's phone buzzed with another text from Jordan: "My mom's friend's daughter made $5K last month. You in??"

She stared at the message, her thumb hovering over the screen. The 'wellness pyramid' – because it wasn't a pyramid scheme, obviously – had already sucked in half the sophomore class. Jordan had become a walking advertisement for crystal-infused water bottles, posting before-and-after photos that were literally just her standing in different lighting.

"I don't think it's for me," Maya texted back.

"Your loss. Some of us are trying to secure the bag."

Maya tossed her phone onto her bed and buried her face in her hands. Her golden retriever, Buster, nudged her elbow with his wet nose, sensing her mood. "At least you don't care about my financial future, Bud," she sighed, scratching behind his ears.

Friday night, while half her friends were at a 'vision board party' / recruitment meeting, Maya ended up at the park with Elias, the quiet kid from her chemistry class who'd recently come out as nonbinary. They sat on the swings, watching the sunset paint the sky pink and orange.

"I can read palms," Elias said suddenly, holding out their hand.

Maya laughed. "For real?"

"My grandma taught me. It's actually lit." Elias grinned, and Maya's stomach did that weird fluttery thing.

She extended her hand, heart pounding as Elias traced the lines on her palm with gentle fingers. "You're going to do something big," they said softly. "See this line? It's unconventional. You're not gonna follow the crowd."

The moment stretched, charged with something Maya couldn't name but definitely wanted to explore.

"Hey," Elias said, "since you're not busy becoming a wellness guru... want to come to my band's show tomorrow?"

Maya smiled, realizing she'd never felt more herself than right now, broke on a swing set with someone who actually saw her. "Absolutely."

Later that night, she saw Jordan's Instagram story: a pyramid of wellness products arranged artfully on a table, captioned "Investing in ME. 🌟✨" Maya rolled her eyes, then blocked the account.

Some things were worth more than $5K. Like learning that the real treasure wasn't at the top of a pyramid – it was in a moment when someone truly saw you, palm to palm, heart to heart.
