Palm Readings at the Corporate Retreat
The sprawl of the desert resort stretched before Elena, artificial **pool** shimmering like a wound in the landscape. She had come here for what HR called 'team building' — that soft corporate euphemism for drinking too much with people you secretly couldn't stand. Her **friend** and former mentor, Marcus, had convinced her to apply for the Director position. He'd poured her second glass of wine and said, 'You're too talented to stay in middle management forever.' That was three months ago. Now she understood why he'd been so eager.
The palm reader sat in a tent near the conference rooms, part of the retreat's 'wellness activities.' Elena sat across from her, extending her hand. The woman traced the lines on her **palm**, her expression unreadable.
'You have betrayal in your past,' the woman said softly. 'And more coming.'
Elena pulled her hand back. She knew about the betrayal. She'd discovered it accidentally — Marcus had been feeding her proposals to his **spy** in the C-suite for months, positioning himself to take credit while she did the work. The promotion interview had been a formality; the decision had already been made.
What the palm reader couldn't see was what Elena planned to do about it.
She found Marcus at the bar that evening, nursing a scotch. He smiled when he saw her, that warm, practiced smile that had made her trust him for three years.
'Elena! How was the interview?'
She ordered a drink, letting the silence stretch. 'Interesting,' she said. 'Janet mentioned something odd — someone had been sending anonymous tips about the department's inefficiencies. Detailed tips. Almost like someone on the inside was trying to make room for themselves.'
Marcus's drink paused halfway to his lips. 'Really?'
'Really.' Elena turned to face him fully. 'She also mentioned that the source's IP address matched your home VPN. Funny coincidence, isn't it?'
The desert night pressed around them, warm and still. Marcus set his glass down carefully.
'I was trying to help you, Elena. The department needs restructuring. Someone had to document the problems.'
'By undermining me in secret?' She kept her voice low. 'By pretending to be my **friend** while setting me up to fail?'
'It's not personal. It's business.' But his eyes couldn't quite meet hers.
Elena finished her drink. 'Janet seemed relieved when I explained the situation. She'd been wondering why the restructuring proposals always sounded exactly like your ideas, just with my name removed.'
She stood up, leaving cash on the bar. 'The **pool** closes at midnight, Marcus. I'd suggest you start looking for another place to swim.'
Outside, she checked her phone. A message from Janet: 'He's being terminated tomorrow. Your promotion is effective immediately.'
Elena walked toward her room, the desert air cooling around her. The palm reader had been right about one thing — there was more betrayal coming. Only this time, she wouldn't be the one bleeding.
