Palm Readings and Pyramid Schemes

Maya's older brother Jayden swore his new friend's "palm reading" app was basically digital sorcery. "Dude, it knew I was gonna fail my calc test before I even studied," he insisted, shoving his phone in Maya's face at the party. Maya rolled her eyes so hard she practically saw her own brain, but when she spotted her crush Ryan across the room, curiosity won. She let Jayden's friend scan her hand.

The screen flashed: BEWARE THE ZOMBIE.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Maya laughed nervously. "Like, actual zombies? Or metaphorically?"

"Probably means you'll be one after finals week," Ryan joked, suddenly appearing behind her. Maya's face burned hotter than a pizza left in a broiler. But then he added, "Hey, wanna see something wild?"

He led her to the kitchen where his sister's friend was explaining her new business venture. "It's not a pyramid scheme," the girl insisted, while literally arranging juice boxes into a pyramid on the counter. "It's a multi-level marketing opportunity. Think about it — who wouldn't want organic superfood energy drinks?"

"My mom tried one of those," Ryan whispered to Maya. "She ended up with forty boxes of expired spinach powder."

Maya giggled, but then disaster struck. As she reached for a drink, her elbow connected with the juice box pyramid. Boxes tumbled everywhere, splashing neon green liquid all over her white shirt. She looked like she'd been bear attacked by a health food store.

"Great," she muttered, staring at her spinach-colored disaster. "Now I really look like a zombie."

But Ryan just grinned. "Nah, you look like someone who knows how to make an entrance."

Later that night, Maya deleted the palm reading app. Some things were better left unpredictable — like whether the cute guy would think you were cool after you destroyed a kitchen with juice boxes. But sometimes, the real magic wasn't in predictions at all. It was in spinach stains and unexpected moments that felt like the beginning of something actually worth knowing.
