Palm Readings and Catfishing
Maya's palms were sweating. Like, actually sweating. Which was ironic, considering she was literally about to get a palm reading at Jenna's birthday party.
"You're next," whispered Chloe, barely looking up from her phone. Chloe had been glued to her screen all night, probably texting Ryan from AP Bio. Maya tried not to feel bitter about it. Failed.
The palm reader's booth smelled like incense and questionable life choices. An older woman with way too much eyeliner grabbed Maya's hand without asking.
"Hmm," the woman said, running a gnarled finger across Maya's palm lines. "You're going to meet someone unexpected. Someone... furry?"
Maya almost laughed. Yeah, right. Her love life was currently serving major disappointment energy. The closest she'd gotten to romance was accidentally liking Ryan's Instagram post from three years ago.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Chloe asked, suddenly interested.
"The cards say... a connection that's not what it seems," the palm reader replied vaguely, shuffling her tarot deck.
Later that night, Maya's phone buzzed. Unknown number.
Hey, this is Ryan from bio. Got your number from group chat. Wanna hang tomorrow?
Maya stared at her screen, heart racing. This was it. Her chance. She spent an hour picking an outfit, another hour curling her hair, and accidentally poked herself in the eye with mascara. She was serving chaos, but hopefully in a cute way.
The coffee shop. She spotted him immediately – varsity jacket, easy smile, the whole package.
"Maya?" He stood up. "Hey!"
Then something huge and fuzzy moved behind him.
"Oh, this is Bear," Ryan said, gesturing to the gnarliest, hairiest cat Maya had ever seen. The thing looked like it had survived five lives and was questioning the value of the remaining ones. "I cat-sit for my aunt on weekends. Hope you're not allergic?"
Maya blinked. The palm reader had said furry, but this was ridiculous.
"No," she said slowly, "I'm actually more of a dog person?"
"Same!" Ryan laughed. "Bear's basically a dog, though. Watch." He made a clicking noise, and the cat actually high-fived him with its paw. "See? Total bro."
Maya found herself laughing for real. Not her fake polite laugh, but actual laughter.
"Your cat's a mood," she said.
"Right?" Ryan pulled out his phone. "Let me show you his Instagram. It's bigger than mine."
And just like that, as Bear the cat judged both of them from across the table, Maya realized something unexpected: sometimes the universe's weird twists worked out okay. Her palm might not have predicted this exact moment, but maybe that was the point.
Bear let out a judgmental meow. Maya took it as a good sign.
