Palm Reading in the Dark

Maya traced the lifeline on Elias's palm, her fingers trembling. They'd been meeting like this for six months—stolen moments in hotel rooms between conferences, guilt and desire warring in her chest. The irony wasn't lost on her: she was sleeping with the enemy while her firm hired a private investigator to expose his company's trade secrets.

"You're thinking too hard," Elias murmured, catching her hand. "I can always tell. Your eyes go distant, like you're swimming somewhere I can't follow."

Maya forced a smile. She *was* swimming—drowning, really—in the deception of it all. The PI had photos of her leaving his apartment last week. Her boss knew. They were using her, letting her think she'd gotten away with it, letting her believe this was still just an affair and not corporate espionage. She was the spy now, whether she'd agreed to it or not.

His phone buzzed on the nightstand. A cat's meow ringtone—his daughter's idea, he'd once told her, eyes softening with fatherly pride. That tenderness had undone her, made her lower her guard. Made her mention the merger deadline. Made her confess things she shouldn't have.

"I have to go," she said, sitting up. The sheets pooled around her waist. "Early meeting tomorrow."

Elias propped himself on one elbow. "Running away again?"

"Never running." She pressed her palm against his cheek, a final farewell she couldn't speak aloud. "Just pacing myself."

She knew what would happen when she walked through her office doors in the morning. The security team waiting, the quiet room, the questions about what she'd told him and when. She'd lose her career, maybe more. But in this moment, with his skin warm against hers, she chose to memorize the weight of his hand in hers, the soft rise and fall of his breathing, the terrible luxury of loving someone she'd been hired to destroy.

Some things, she decided, were worth the fall.
