Palm Reader's Paradise
Maya's dad dragged her to the Palm Springs Resort for the summer, and she was absolutely prepared to hate every second of it. Then she saw the padel courts.
That's when she got the idea.
"Fortunes told!" she scrawled on a piece of cardboard, sitting under a palm tree near the smoothie bar. "Five bucks. No questions asked."
The first customer was Tyler, who played padel with the cool kids and had hair that defied gravity. He sat down, all nervous energy.
"Your palm says..." Maya squinted at his hand dramatically. "You're going to ask someone to the summer mixer."
Tyler's face went bright red. "How'd you—"
"I can't reveal my methods." She gestured to her vintage sun hat, the oversized one her grandma gave her. "It channels the energy."
Pretty soon, she had a line. Kids from the padel courts, the pool crowd, even the staff. Maya didn't know anything about palm reading, but she knew how to read people. The girl who kept glancing at the lifeguard. The guy who'd been practicing his serve alone for weeks.
"Your future's... bright," she told them, serving up hope alongside papaya smoothies from the bar.
Word spread. The palm girl under the palm tree. She became part of the scene, exactly what she'd wanted when she first saw the padel courts from her hotel balcony.
Then came the day Tyler's date to the mixer stood him up. Maya found him sitting alone on a bench, his padel racket beside him.
"Sorry," she said. "My powers. They're... limited."
He laughed. "Nah. You gave me the courage to ask. That's something."
Something shifted inside her. The hat wasn't a costume anymore. The palm readings weren't just a scheme.
"Want another reading?" she asked. "On the house."
By summer's end, Maya wasn't reading palms for popularity. She was doing it because sometimes people just needed someone to tell them that whatever they were feeling—that awkwardness, those crushes, the fear of not fitting in—was going to be okay.
The palm tree witnessed it all. And somewhere, her grandma's hat kept channeling something real.
