Palm Lines and Perfect Games
Maya stared at her left **palm**, tracing the life line that curved around her thumb. TikTok said if your life line's long, you'll live forever. If it's short, well... she didn't want to think about that. Especially not today.
"You nervous?" Liam asked, spinning a **baseball** between his fingers like he'd been doing it since birth. Which, honestly, he kinda had. His dad had coached since before Liam could walk.
"Nah," Maya lied, though her palms were literally sweating into her batting gloves. "Just... pre-game ritual."
Liam raised an eyebrow but didn't push. That's what she liked about him—he didn't make everything weird.
Coach Martinez, who the team secretly called "the **bull**" behind his back (seriously, the man stormed through practices like he was charging through china shop), blew his whistle. "Listen up! Tryouts today. I'm watching everything. Your form. Your attitude. Your heart."
Maya's stomach did a full gymnastics routine. She'd been playing softball since she was seven, but this was freshman year. High school. Where legends were made or crushed in a single season.
Her palm itched. She resisted checking her life line again.
"Batter up!" Coach barked.
Maya stepped to the plate. The pitcher—some junior with arms like actual tree trunks—wound up and threw a fastball that practically hummed.
Strike one.
Her palms were sweating now. Great. So much for looking cool.
"Focus," Liam whispered from the dugout. "You got this."
The next pitch came. Maya didn't think. She just swung.
CRACK.
The ball soared past the infield, over the outfielder's head, and kept going. Maya dropped her bat and ran, cleats digging into the dirt, heart pounding like a bass drum at a concert.
Safe at third.
"YEAH MAYA!" Liam whooped. The team went nuts.
Coach nodded. "Not bad. Not bad at all."
Walking back to the dugout, Maya glanced at her palm one more time. The life line looked the same, but somehow different now. Like maybe the future wasn't written in your hands after all. Maybe you just had to swing.
"So?" Liam grinned. "Still reading palms, or are we playing ball?"
Maya high-fived him. "Both. But definitely playing ball."
