Palm Lines and Party Lies

palmcablespy

Maya's hand trembled as Chloe traced the lines on her **palm**, her manicured nail grazing Maya's skin like she was reading something written there.

"You're gonna meet someone tonight," Chloe whispered, leaning in close enough that Maya could smell her vanilla perfume. "Like, actually meet them. Not just stare from across the room like you usually do."

Maya's cheeks burned. Everyone knew about her crush on Ryan – apparently even Chloe, the girl who'd barely spoken to her all semester until tonight, when the house party had grown too loud and they'd both ended up on the back patio, hiding from the chaos.

"I'm not gonna **spy** on him," Maya protested, pulling her hand back. "I'm literally just vibing."

"Vibing? In the corner? For two hours?" Chloe laughed, and it wasn't mean – just genuine, like they were already friends. "Girl, we both know you've been lowkey stalking his Instagram since September."

Maya opened her mouth to deny it, but what was the point? It was true, and somehow Chloe knowing made it less embarrassing.

Then disaster struck.

Chloe's phone died mid-sentence – she'd been showing Maya some TikTok trend Maya was too uncool to know about. The charging cable was tangled around Chloe's ankle like a snake, and when she tried to stand up, she tripped.

The cable whipped out from under her and knocked over one of those expensive string lights strung across the patio. The whole display went dark.

"Oh my god," Maya whispered. "Chloe –"

"RUN," Chloe hissed, grabbing Maya's wrist.

They bolted through the sliding door, past the speakers blasting something that shook the floorboards, up the stairs where people were making out on the landing, and into the first empty room they could find.

They collapsed against the closed door, panting, and Maya realized with horror that they were in Ryan's room. Posters of bands she'd never heard of covered the walls. His guitar leaned in the corner.

"We're literally in his room," Chloe wheezed. "We're the worst kind of creeps."

"You tripped on a **cable**," Maya said weakly. "I just followed you."

"Oh my god, we need to –"

The door swung open.

Ryan stood there, Solo cup in hand, staring at them. For one endless moment, nobody spoke.

Then he just – smiled.

"You know," he said, "that light display has been janky for weeks. It was an accident waiting to happen."

"We were just –" Maya started.

"Hiding from the party?" He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. "Me too. These things get exhausting, you know?"

That night, Maya learned two things: palm readings at parties were usually just people saying whatever they thought you needed to hear, and sometimes the worst moments – the ones where you're trapped in a crush's room with a stranger you barely know – turn into something better than you could have planned.

Chloe and Ryan's room became their secret spot. Eventually, so did the patio with the broken lights.

And Maya finally understood: sometimes you don't find the person you're looking for. Sometimes they find you when you're busy running away from your own mess.
