Padel Court Pyramid Scheme

padellightningspypyramid

The country club's social hierarchy was literally built like a pyramid. Eighth graders at the base, seniors at the top, and Leo stuck somewhere in the middle, trying to climb without looking like he was trying.

"Bro, you're overthinking it," Marcus said, handing him a padel racquet. "Just hit the ball. Don't make it weird."

But everything was weird when your crush was watching from the bleachers. Leo had been low-key spying on Maya's Instagram stories for weeks—okay, months—and now she was actually here, watching him play padel like a certified loser.

The sky turned that weird purple-green color that means trouble. "Lightning warning," the coach yelled. "Everyone inside!"

Everyone except Maya, that is. She was still sitting there, scrolling through her phone like she didn't have a care in the world. Like this wasn't literally the most important moment of Leo's life.

"Bro," Marcus said. "This is your shot. Literally."

The first lightning strike hit the pool umbrella. *CRACK.* Everyone screamed. Maya looked up, finally.

That's when Leo saw it. The moment. The shot. He ran toward her, padel racquet still in hand, like some certified rom-com protagonist. "You should probably get inside," he said, because his brain was 80% anxiety and 20% terrible pick-up lines.

She smiled. And not in a polite way. In a genuine way. "You play padel?"

"Terribly," Leo said. "But I look good doing it."

She laughed, and it was better than any victory he'd ever had on any court. They ran inside together, dodging the rain, and spent the next hour talking about everything and nothing while the storm raged outside.

Later, Marcus found them. "So... how's the view from the top of the pyramid?"

Leo looked at Maya, who was still laughing at his terrible jokes. "Pretty good, actually. Pretty damn good."
