Padel Court Confidential

friendspypadelspinach

Maya pressed her back against the gym wall, heart pounding like a bass drop at a music festival. She was technically just grabbing her forgotten water bottle, but let's be real — she was totally spying.

The popular squad played padel every Tuesday, and Maya had been watching them for weeks. Chloe, with her perfect messy bun and apparently effortless backhand. Liam, who'd somehow make everyone laugh even when he missed an easy shot. They were the kind of friend group that seemed impossible to break into.

"Nice form, spy," Chloe said, suddenly appearing behind her. Maya's phone clattered to the ground. Great. Now she'd be labeled a total creep until graduation.

Chloe's grin wasn't mocking though. "We've seen you watching. Why haven't you joined us?"

Maya's face burned. "I... I don't really play. And you guys seem like you've been friends forever."

"Literally none of us knew each other three months ago," Liam called from the court. "We bonded over mutual incompetence. It's kind of our thing."

That Thursday, Maya showed up with a borrowed racquet and zero chill. Her hands shook so badly she nearly whiffed her first serve. But something clicked — maybe it was the way Chloe high-fived her anyway, or how Liam made a ridiculous joke about Maya's serve being "aggressive, like it has something to prove."

They played for two hours. Maya's arms felt like jelly, her ponytail was falling apart, and she was pretty sure she'd never laughed this hard in her life.

"Wanna grab food?" Chloe asked afterward. "There's this place with the best smoothies."

"Yes!" Maya almost shouted. "I mean, sure. Cool. Whatever."

At the smoothie place, Maya ordered the greenest thing on the menu — something with spinach and mango and probably actual grass — because she was trying to impress them with her ~sophisticated taste~.

"Dude," Liam said, staring at her cup. "You're brave. That looks like liquid lawn."

Maya smiled so wide she felt something green stuck between her teeth. Of course. Of course this would happen now.

"You have..." Chloe gestured at her own teeth. Maya's stomach dropped.

"We've all been there," Liam said smoothly, not making a big deal of it. "First week, I got kale stuck in my braces during a presentation. Had to finish talking like a literal rabbit."

Maya wiped her teeth and finally, finally, breathed. She wasn't spying anymore. She wasn't watching from the outside. She was sitting here with spinach in her teeth, laughing until her stomach hurt, and somehow that felt like winning.
