Padel Court Confidential
Emma's summer wasn't supposed to be interesting. She was stuck at her grandparents' ranch in the middle of nowhere, bored out of her mind, until she spotted him—Jake, the quiet boy from her history class, practicing padel against the barn wall alone. Her best friend Chloe had been convinced Jake was hiding something. "He's definitely got secret," Chloe had texted. "We should spy."
Emma grabbed her phone, heart thudding. This was her chance to finally do something wild. She'd play spy, just for ten minutes, then report back to Chloe. Easy.
She crept closer, ducking behind the old tractor. But before she could even snap a pic for proof, a massive dog—a chocolate lab with one floppy ear—bounded over and started barking like crazy. Jake looked up straight at her hiding spot.
"Uh, hi?" he said, flipping his messy hair. Emma felt her face burn. Great. Now she looked like a total creep.
Then she noticed it—tucked under Jake's arm was a tiny calf. A baby bull. Its big brown eyes stared up at her, all wobbly and confused. "This is Ferdinand," Jake said softly. "His mom didn't make it. I'm bottle-feeding him every two hours."
Emma's embarrassment vanished. "That's... actually kind of awesome?"
Jake shrugged. "Yeah. My family helps rescue farm animals." He gestured toward the padel court. "Wanna hit some? I could use a break from Ferdinand crying every time I put him down."
They played until sunset, Emma learning that Jake wasn't mysterious at all—he was just a guy who loved padel, rescued baby animals, and didn't know how to talk to girls. The dog, Buster, kept running off with the ball.
Chloe's text came later: "Well?? What did you find out??"
Emma smiled at her phone, then at the new contact in her favorites list. "Nothing," she typed back. "Just that I learned how to play padel. And that Jake's kind of perfect."
Some secrets were worth keeping, especially the ones that weren't really secrets at all.
