Padel at Sunset
Maya discovered the truth at the padel court. She and Marcus had been playing for months, their Tuesday evening games a ritual of competition and connection. But tonight, as she watched him chug from his water bottle between sets, something felt wrong.
His eyes followed her differently now—not with admiration, but calculation. Each serve, each volley, he was studying her like a specimen.
"You're playing differently," she said during a changeover.
Marcus wiped sweat from his forehead. "Just trying to improve."
But Maya had noticed the small camera lens in his gym bag earlier. The way he always asked about her work at the tech startup. The questions that seemed casual but weren't.
She thought back to their first date three months ago—drinks at a rooftop bar, his hand on her knee, his laughter at her jokes. Had any of it been real? Or was he just another corporate spy sent to infiltrate her company?
The sun dipped below the horizon as they finished their match. Marcus reached for his water bottle again.
"Same time next week?" he asked.
Maya looked at him—really looked at him. The handsome engineer she'd fallen for. The man who might be destroying her career.
"Actually," she said, "I think I'm done with padel."
His expression didn't change, but she saw it—the flicker of something cold behind his eyes. The spy revealed.
"That's unfortunate," he said. "I was enjoying our games."
"Me too," she replied, and walked away, leaving him standing alone on the court as darkness settled over the city.
