Paddle and Surveillance

Elena ran her fingers through her hair, dark and wet from the pool's chlorinated water, watching him across the deck. He was playing padel with his colleagues—laughing, competitive, completely unaware that every move he made was being documented.

She'd been embedded in his company for six months. A corporate spy hired by his competitor to steal the proprietary algorithm his team had spent three years developing. It was supposed to be straightforward: get close, get the code, get out. But things had become complicated.

"You joining us?" David called from the padel court, wiping sweat from his brow.

"Next time," she lied, forcing a smile. "Running late."

The lie was easy now. She'd been lying to everyone for months. Her hair was still damp from her morning laps at the pool—early, before anyone else arrived, when she could pretend to be just another corporate climber starting her day with exercise. The running helped her think, helped her forget the way he looked at her over drinks last Friday, the way he'd touched her arm and said, "I feel like I can really trust you."

The irony was suffocating.

That evening, she decrypted the final set of files from his workstation. The algorithm was complete. She should have transmitted it immediately. Instead, she found herself at the padel club again, watching him play under floodlights, pretending this was just another corporate social event.

"You seem distant," David said afterward, sitting beside the now-empty pool, the water reflecting moonlight.

Elena looked at him—really looked at him. He wasn't a mark anymore. He was just a man who trusted the wrong person.

"I'm leaving the company," she said, surprising herself.

His smile faltered. "Oh. Competing offer?"

"Something like that."

She walked away before he could see her breaking. She was running, yes—from him, from herself, from what she'd almost become. But for the first time in her career as a spy, she wasn't sure who she was running toward anymore.
