Orange Warning at the Pool

Margaret sat at the edge of the hotel pool, legs submerged in water that shimmered like liquid jewels in the dying light. The orange sunset bled across the sky, painting everything in hues of warning and surrender. She adjusted her sunglasses, though there was no one left to hide from.

Three months ago, she'd been the one doing the watching. A corporate spy embedded in her own company, feeding trade secrets to competitors while sleeping beside her husband of fifteen years. The money had been meant to fund their dream house. Instead, it funded her moral disintegration.

She'd been recruited at a conference much like this one—another pool, another orange sunset, another promise of easy wealth. The recruiter had positioned himself at the shallow end, watching her swim laps with predatory precision. "You're going places," he'd said, handing her a burner phone wrapped in a hotel towel. "Places your current employers will never let you reach."

Now the FBI was negotiating her plea agreement. The corporate espionage charge alone could mean ten years. Her husband had left when he discovered the truth—not the infidelity, but the betrayal of her colleagues, of the friends who'd trusted her with their careers.

The pool emptied around her as guests retreated to dinner. Margaret watched an orange slice float on the water's surface, discarded from someone's drink. It bobbed gently, suspended between sinking and swimming. She thought about the burner phone at the bottom of her suitcase, the one they'd told her to keep until the signal came.

Her phone vibrated against the pool chair. A text from her handler: "Orange alert. Get out now."
