Orange Sunset Secrets
Maya's thumbs hovered over her iPhone screen, heart racing as she tapped through Jade's private Instagram stories for the third time that night. She felt gross, honestly—spying on her best friend like some digital detective. But Jade had been acting weird all week, ditching their usual after-school smoothie runs with vague excuses about 'family stuff.'
Then Maya saw it: a pic of Jade with the popular crowd, wearing that orange crop top Maya had helped her pick out last month. The caption said 'real ones' with a heart emoji.
Real ones.
Maya's stomach twisted. They'd been inseparable since seventh grade, through bad haircuts and first crushes and that time Maya cried behind the bleachers when she didn't make volleyball. Now she was scrolling through evidence that she wasn't even part of Jade's world anymore.
Her phone buzzed. Jade.
'hey, you coming to my house later? mom made those cookies you like'
Maya stared at the message, tears burning her eyes. She could pretend everything was fine, keep playing the role of the oblivious friend while Jade secretly wished she was cool enough for the orange-soda-energy crowd.
Or she could confront it.
'no,' Maya typed back, 'can we talk though?'
'yeah everything ok??'
'Mayla locked her phone and grabbed her backpack. She'd ride her bike over, say it to Jade's face. Whatever happened next—awkward silence, screaming match, maybe even losing her oldest friend—it was better than being the spy in her own life, watching from the sidelines while the person she trusted most became someone she didn't recognize at all.
The sun dipped below the horizon as she pedaled, painting the sky in brilliant oranges and pinks, beautiful and bleeding together, just like things used to be.
